The great Marian shrine of Le Puy gave its name to one of the four French routes to Compostela. It had a long standing history as one of the most pilgrimage centres in France due to its miracle working Black Madonna. The architecture of cathedral and its cloister used Moorish motifs reflecting the exchanges with Andalusia and its prominent role in the Compostelan pilgrimage.
